20 Years of National Cyclotron and PET Scan Centre, Chulabhorn Hospital: Reshaping Thai Nuclear Medicine, Honoring the Royal Vision Toward an International "Frontier" in Healthcare Services
BANGKOK, September 19, 2026 – The National Cyclotron and PET Scan Centre, Chulabhorn Hospital, marks its 20th anniversary, highlighting its pivotal role in advancing high-tech medicine in Thailand. Founded upon the vision of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana, President of Chulabhorn Royal Academy and Founder of Chulabhorn Hospital, the Centre fulfills Her ambition to provide cancer and complex disease patients access to world-class diagnostics and therapies locally. Over two decades, the Centre has evolved into an active "Frontier" in healthcare services and a leader in Thai nuclear medicine through key innovations:
1. Raising Standards to World-Class (EARL & QUANUM Accreditation): Certified as an International Centre of Excellence for PET/CT and PET/MRI imaging and Theranostics services by the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM). It is also undergoing quality audits for QUANUM accreditation by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), becoming Thailand's first high-standard cyclotron centre.
2. "Theranostics" Innovation: Targeted Diagnosis and Therapy in One: Combines therapeutics and diagnostics by using one radiopharmaceutical to locate tumors via PET scan, followed by a matching therapeutic radiopharmaceutical to target and destroy cancer cells directly while sparing surrounding healthy tissue.
3. Pioneering Over 27 Radiopharmaceuticals: Manufactured under GMP PIC/S and distributed under GDP PIC/S standards to reduce foreign reliance. Key achievements include in-house production of Lutetium-177 PSMA for hormone-refractory metastatic prostate cancer—showing a >50% response rate and extending overall survival to an average of 18 months—and launching an Actinium-225 PSMA clinical trial with Siriraj Hospital. Diagnostic advancements also include F-18 NaF PET/CT for bone metastases, O-15 Water PET for non-invasive cardiac evaluation, and F-18 NOTA-Octreotide for neuroendocrine tumors.
4. Key Milestone in Dementia Care for Aging Society: Expanding long-term production expertise toward comprehensive Alzheimer's screening and Anti-Amyloid therapy support. The Centre offers advanced neuro-pathological diagnostic brain scans, including 18F FDG (metabolism), 18F FBB (amyloid plaque), 18F PI2620 (tau protein), and 18F FDOPA (dopamine), enabling early diagnosis and targeted disease-modifying care.
5. Thailand's First PET/MRI and PET/CT Leader: Combines molecular nuclear medicine with high-resolution MRI to accurately evaluate lesions in the brain, nervous system, head and neck, liver, and pelvis while significantly reducing radiation doses.
6. R&D Frontier Vision for 2027: Targeting the development and production of at least two new radiopharmaceuticals by 2027 to drive national self-reliance and build a fully integrated dementia care hub for Thailand's aging society.
Marking its 20th anniversary, the National Cyclotron and PET Scan Centre, Chulabhorn Hospital, stands as an integrated excellence centre for diagnostic imaging and nuclear therapy. Certified by EARL and QUANUM, the Centre pioneers Theranostics and manufactures over 27 GMP/GDP-compliant radiopharmaceuticals distributed nationwide to reduce import dependency. Operating daily to shorten waiting times and accept nationwide referrals, the Centre honors the vision of Professor Dr. Her Royal Highness Princess Chulabhorn Krom Phra Srisavangavadhana by making advanced, high-cost medical sciences accessible, impactful, and equitable for all Thai citizens.
